Malå

Welcome to Malå !

The core of Malås economy is provided by mining, forestry and wood processing, reindeer husbandry, trade and transport. Malå is a geological centre in both Swedish and European terms. It is in an area that contains Northern Europe’s most commercially interesting deposits of copper, zink and gold. There are many mines in the area. It is a field which is going through a phase of rapid technical development. A number of prospecting companies are established in the area. The Geological Survey of Sweden, SGU, has a mineral information office in Malå with a core sample collection of 3.5 million metres of cores from all over Sweden, together with unique cartographical material.

In the forest industries sector there is a modern sawmill with a planning mill and a number of companies that produce wood products for laminated boards, kitchen cupboards, chests and coffins, hotel furnishings and windows. The engineering industry is represented by Hultdins system, a manufacturer of boom tip equipment for forest machines, and Malå Geoscience, that are amongst the most innovative GPR provider in the world with clients in over 100 countries. Reindeer husbandry is another important occupation. The municipality contains Sweden’s most southerly forest Sami village. A dynamic commercial and industrial life requires good transport facilities for both goods and people. Large fleets of vehicles serve these industries, and there are three airports within 120 km. The well developed IT infrastructure and the availability of industrial premises creates a favourable climate for both existing industry and new companies.
