There are four airports in the area that have scheduled flights to Stockholm and other European cities. The largest airport is Kallax Airport located in Luleå. Kallax has the most scheduled flights and the capacity to land all sizes of aircraft. At 3,350 meters, the runway is the longest in Scandinavia. Driving times from the airport to testing areas range from one and one-half hours to 3 hours. The airport’s size and far north location mean that flights to regions in the northern hemisphere are no more than 12 hours (e.g. Japan) and usually much less (e.g. three hours to Germany). In recent years the airport has strengthened its cargo handling capacity and is able to handle all sizes of loads.
Closer to the testing areas is the airport at Arvidsjaur. Flights are less frequent and are provided by regional carriers. While there are flights to other European cities, the main link to Europe and the world is through Stockholm where there are many connecting flights that reach major cities throughout the world. Driving times to testing areas average one to one and a half hours. These airports can land a range of cargo aircraft.
