Jokkmokk

Jokkmokk municipality is Sweden’s second largest with a surface area of more than 17,000 square kilometers. Population density is less than 0.3 persons per square kilometer. The area is well-known in Sweden for its natural beauty and history. Four of Sweden’s national parks are located entirely or partly within Jokkmokk’s boundaries and in 1996 it was named a UNESCO world-heritage area.

The region holds an important place in Lapp heritage and culture. Since at least the early 1600s a yearly regional market has been held in the village of Jokkmokk, the place from which the municipality gets its name. Originally, the market was a time for Lapps to socialize and trade with each other and to sell goods to merchants from the south of Sweden. Today the market has become both a tribute to Lapp culture and a major yearly event in Northern Sweden.

The area offers more than an opportunity to enjoy nature and to experience Lapp culture. Its location, climate and terrain have made it one of Europe’s ideal winter automotive testing areas. The varied terrain, flat areas and winter ice roads make it a perfect location for the testing of vehicles and components under demanding natural conditions. Transport and communication systems are up to date and local government is interested in working with new employers in developing additional infrastructure and in improving existing resources.

Luleå airport, one of Europe’s largest is less than a 3 hours drive from the centre of the municipality. From Luleå’s airport there are multiple daily flights to Stockholm’s major airport. It is possible to be in Jokkmokk in the morning and in some of Europe’s major cites by late afternoon!

The Jokkmokk area has supported winter automotive testing operations for the past 30 years and is interested in attracting more test operations. Along with a cooperative local government, the community has a technically skilled population oriented towards providing services needed by the testing industry.
