Arjeplog is divided by the Polar Circle that runs almost diagonally from one side to the other of the municipality’s borders. Being next to Norway on the West means that the western half of the community lays in Sweden’s mountain region; an area noted for both its natural beauty and rugged conditions. The size of the municipality (almost 13,000 square kilometers) and the number of inhabitants (approximately 3,200) mean that the population density averages 0.25 persons per square kilometer; an ideal combination for the secure testing of new designs and technologies. The area’s natural beauty is another reason why Arjeplog is a great area to live and work. Hiking, sport fishing and winter cross-country skiing are among the many outdoor activities popular in the region. Too, the northern location means that summer days are almost without end; a perfect way to enjoy scenery and outdoor activities to the fullest! While Arjeplog may seem to be isolated, air and road connections bring it close to Europe’s centres. The airport in Arvidsjaur is within a reasonable driving distance. From the Arvidsjaur airport are daily flights to Stockholm’s major airport and several flights a week to cites in Europe. The oldest occupations in the area are connected to reindeer herding. Today, there are six Lapp communities that are continuing into the 21st century this traditional occupation. With the coming of Swedes from the south during the 17th and 18th centuries, wood and mining industries were developed. Both play an important part in the area’s present economy. Newest to the area, yet one of the fastest growing is the specialty of “cold climate testing”. Since 1972, when Teldex of Germany came to the area, there have been testing operations in the region. Today, almost one-half of all winter automotive and component testing takes place in Arjeplog. Automotive and automotive component manufacturers from Europe, Asia and the US have operations in the area. The size of the region, along with numerous lakes and rivers, make it easy to situate operations in areas where all types of winter conditions can be encountered and where security can be assured. Microclimates in the area mean that specific conditions remain present for long periods. The long winter period and thick lake ice mean that flat tracks can be in operation for months in succession. The area’s long-term relationship with the testing industry means that there are skilled personnel available for support activities and a community that values its new industry. The community’s people and government stand ready to meet and make welcome newcomers to Sweden’s testing industry. Additional information about the area may be found at:
